ADSL Slow Down

Hi All,

I've got a bit of a problem with my Nildram Networked Broadband
connection. I'm using a Solwise SAR715 Router with 2 PC's feeding into
it, both are virtually the same spec. and set up the same, but while I
get a constant speed connection, my son's connection slows down badly
after a few minutes from switch-on, to the point where pages don't load.
If he switches the PC off and re-boots it is fine again for a few
minutes then slows again!

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions as to what might be the cause?

Thanks,

John

Is your son's PC connected via USB ?

If it is, some people get a slowdown in connection speeds & restarting sorts
it out in the short term, but of course restarting every few mins isn't
ideal.

Ethernet seems to be a much more stable way to connect some PC's to a
broadband connection.

The only time I've seen something similar was on a machine driving a
non-standard USB device which was sucking too much voltage from the host.
It's prolly a long shot but get him to disconnect all his USB devices, use
PS2 style keyboard and mouse, see what happens.

What IP addresses are all three machines set to on your LAN ? When he slows
down next get him to ping the other two addresses and see if his response
time is radically longer than when he boots.

What happens when your machine is off and he's the only one on the 'net ?

Of course it could simply be a case of your machine sucking up all the
bandwidth and leaving him with next to nothing.

Thanks for the replies.

We are using a wired Ethernet network with the Router connected to the
Net directly, no USB in the system. The Router has the primary address
and each PC a sub address handled by the NAT configuration within the
Router.

He uses more bandwidth than me, as I am usually just surfing or in
Newsgroups. He likes on-line gaming, but this isn't much fun when the
connection slows. Besides he gets the problem when just surfing rather
than only when gaming!

John.

I'd run a thorough virus check on your son's computer. You can temporarily
connect your computer onto the router port which your son uses...or better
still plug the end of the cable from your sons computer into your comnputer
to test that port and lead. I doubt very much it will be the cable, most
likely some software problem or a mail transmitted virus that starts
running and sucking off the bandwidth.

Has he scanned it for spyware ?

Spybot Search & Destroy - http://security.kolla.de

One of the lads in work had a problem booting his machine, and it turned
out he had a couple of "minor" spyware infestations - his machine was
taking SIX HOURS to boot up !

Sorted in seconds, and he`s happy again :-)

Another thought on this matter - if you have file sharing enabled between
machines, make sure you password them.

It doesn`t need to be a hard password, but it will stop any viruses
propagating across the network to your box :-p

If possible, leave the file sharing in "read only" mode between machines
too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have used a different cable and Port on
the Router without any improvement. Also went through and checked
Cookies with Gobot. Found and destroyed but that also made no
difference. Network file sharing has been put under password control.

The only other thing that he has told me is that he had similar problems
with his old PC (we have both upgraded in the past couple of weeks). The
old system was an Athlon 1.4 but now he has an Intel 2.6 HT Pentium 4.
I'm beginning to think it may be some software that he has installed on
both systems, so if things don't improve, may be will re-install and run
the connection with minimum software installed and as new stuff is
added, re-test until the system slows. If this works, just hoping that
the offending software isn't something important!

John, ask him if he is running SETI software. It can be set to run in
the background and I used to have trouble on two PCs with it grabbing
all resources and grinding everything else to a halt. He could try
looking with task manager to see if he can spot this or anything else
being super greedy.
