ISP. Virgin.net
Exchange: Littleborough
Connection : 2 PCs via combi router modem

Can anyone give me any advice , procedures to follow in order to check
whether I'm correctly setup
eg how do I ping to tell what speed I've got.

I am connected, it just seems only a little faster than a 56k modem......

If your problems occured only this morning, I suspect the net was a bit
broken in general throughout the morning. I lost my Easynet BB for a
few hours & someone I know with Tiscali BB complained of it being slow
all morning.

Here's a speed test you can try -

My own cynical view is that when eventually everyone is convinced that
broadband is the way to go and we are all connected to it it will be
like the M25 - S L O W
