A friend is considering allowing internet access to a couple of PCs
(one laptop, one desktop, both running Win 98 SE) using wireless.

Not especially worried about speed - both are for other members of
the family, so he can be spared them using his main PC. I've been
looking around and saw a D-Link 604+ with the DWL-650+ PCMCIA card
at 99.99 and the DWL-G520+ PCI card at 34.99 (both plus VAT) with
DSLsource.co.uk but wondered if others have seen similar or better
deals and can recommend hardware/suppliers please ? I took a look
at Google but with special discounts taking place newsgroup posts
may not have "the latest" that some keen-eyed readers may know of.

I have recently purchased a Belkin 7630 and it seems fine for web browsing
etc.

The Belkin model is considerably cheaper(try ebuyer) than D-Link's and
supports 54G as well... - even though speed is not your primary concern.

The only other thing I would mention is if buying an internal PCI card for
the desktop - is check the motherboard specs.. the Belkin 54G PCI card will
work with the PCI 2.1 spec - others (linksys for one) need the motherboard
PCI standard to be a minimum of 2.2 or they will refuse to work.

Regards
Sunil

Thanks for the info, and the warning.

Of course, (for the sake of the other poster) I had looked at Ebuyer,
but was after someone with hands-on experience which adds much to
the value of the information provided, IMHO. Peter M.

try www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk who have an offer of a Netgear DG834G 54 Mbps
wireless modem router and a FREE Netgear WG511T 108 Mbps wireless laptop
card for £97 plus carriage. I found them really easy to set up.

Further to my other post..

I actually got an unexpected chance to play with a D-Link 604+ yesterday...
it seems very full featured but I hated its GUI - certainly not the most
user friendly.

Its also worth pointing out that Belkin have freephone/lifetime tech support
etc..

Netgear DG834G's are also quite popular - if you don't mind having to keep
updating the firmware!

Regards
Sunil

http://chris.lab6.com/belkin1.mp3 - an example of just how useless these
lot are. The details given are false, all we wanted to do was find out
whether their tech support people could talk us through finding out the
IP of our router. They are utter *idiots* and unable to do this.

hmmmm! That was the first solution offered for the DG814 I have here
(see other post) It died within 10 days of purchase so they happily
sent out a new one, after requesting a firmware update to the latest
version (that was about 18 months ago). Works fine as a box the cat
warmed herself on during the winter :-) Peter M.

Thanks. I did glance at the site. I've been a bit wary of Netgear
for some time, but they are worth looking at. I have a DG814 here
(ADSL side is dead, I use it as a 10/100 switch between three bits
of my LAN, and it allows me to check menu options for a remote one
I support. (I got it free as Netgear just sent a replacement when
the ADSL modem died [kept line engaged, as in "off hook"] - never
asked for this one back, though it was ready to go...)

actually that's no big disadvantage - could be a positive thing if it
means the technically minded younger family members of the household
are frightened off messing with it... With parents out at work or
doing chores these youngsters are likely to "investigate" settings
if they get a chance, otherwise! Still, I was looking back at some
"how do I" queries and will review the options with GUI/firmware
problems in mind. The intended account blocks peer-to-peer so some
problems of too many connections may be avoided. Peter M.
