ADSL Router - Longest 'online' time?

Hiya, we've had our BT Voyager 2110 for about a week, and it's always
switched on.
We've been 'connected' to the internet for 6 days non stop. I switched my
computer on tonight, and was just looking at the connection stats (purely
just for interest), and the 6 days has gone down to just over a day. And the
line up count has changed to two. Now I'm guessing there was an interruption
to the connection? Is this normal? What's the maximum online time you've had
a router count up to? The System up time still shows 7 days, so that rules
out a powercut?

I'm on Virgin 2MB Broadband if that makes any difference, and had no
problems with surfing, or disconnecting.

Cheers,

Matthew Long

Normally it'll be just a few days, with dynamic IP addresses the IP
address is 'leased', and that lease usually only lasts a few days. The
modem will reset itself to accept the new IP address.

As far as uptime goes, I haven't had to reset my modem for a server
error for months.

The longest time my router has recorded being online is about 1200 hours (ie
50 days). And it would probably have been longer but I needed to unplug the
router to take it to a customer's house to do wireless coverage checks
before committing him to buying a router of his own. However when I looked
just now, the ADSL connection had been up for only 23 hours because the line
dropped about 00:30 this morning. So it's very variable.

I'm not sure whether it's the router, my ISP or BT that cause the
disconnections.

Much longer than that...!

Current login time is only 10 days or so, since I moved the router to a
new rack and I had to power off...but I'm sure I've had a month, at
least.

All static IPs here, mind...

My Draytek 2600 router was up for ~4 months, in fact it could easily have
been 2 years if it wasn't for fairly frequent power cuts here in the
boondocks (4 miles from centre of Maidstone!).
However, now that Plus.Net switched to dynamic IP, it's about 5 days max.

Martin

When I was with Demon my WAN connection (i.e. ADSL) used to regularly
exceed 1000hrs on Netgear router. The longest I recall was about
1600hrs.

Since moving to Freedom2Surf and having my poor quality line (52dB
att, margin around 12dB) regraded to 2Mb the uptime rarely exceeds
500hrs. But then in my office I have a Draytek 2600 plugged into a
much better line (19dB att, margin around 37dB) with Metronet and that
rarely exceeds 500hrs as well.

Router uptime willy-waving time, is it? NetGear DG834G, firmware 1.05,
on Zen: saw 5754hrs before I decided to update it to 2.10.20. I had to
restart it to do that, though.

For your (and my!) account type, only, in case anyone especially wants
a fixed IP... Plus.Net (like a number of other ISPs) has given fixed
IP for years. Only the Broadband Plus a/c (and most dial-up, I guess)
has dynamic IP. Peter M.

UK ADSL <http://tinyurl.com/5jpa4> - Happy to save cash with Plus.Net!!

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

The Vigor 2600VG here has been up about 54 days since the last
firmware upgrade - prior to that any VPN or VoIP traffic caused it to
lock up every few days (or hours at times!) - but it's been stable
since.

The Vigor 2600 at work has been up since the beginning of May when we
moved offices.

They're both on UPS's so power cuts (of less than an hour'ish) are not
a problem.

Never been down when I've needed to use it ... and that's what counts.
