I need to replace a borrowed Draytek ADSL router, but the telephone line is
approx. 4.5km long and has low SNR for a 2 Mbps service.

The exact stats are:
SNR Margin 16.5dB
NE Current Attenuation 52.0 dB
Far SNR Margin 19.0 dB
Far Current Attenuation 31.5dB

Obviously the line is outside BT's limits for the 2Mbps service, but it
seems to be working ok and speed tests indicate circa 1900 kbps.

The two models I have narrowed it down to are the Draytek 2600VG (which is
the wireless / VOIP model of the unit borrowed) and the similarly speced
ZyXel P-2602HW. Of the two I have a slight preference for the ZyXel due to
some minor features, although core ADSL performance is the main criteria.

Does anyone have any experience of these two routers with low SNR and how
the ZyXel P-2602HW compares to the Draytek? Research on this group suggests
that ZyXel are good in this area, but there is little on the P-260HW. Are
ZyXel more sensitive than Draytek?

Thanks Guys.

Marty C

The Draytek one is in a different league to the ZyXel.

You can get a set of firmware for the Draytek especially for conditions of
low S/N ratio within the UK. Have a look on the Draytek forums at
Draytek.co.uk

I have Draytek 2600VG on 4.9km 1Mb/s line untouched for 2+ years.
Attenuation steady at 51.5, SNR fluctuates avg. ~11 and often lot lower.
I have installed Zyxel 26002HWL for family member on quite short 2Mb/s line,
working fine, 4 months so far.
Now that Draytek has updated their VoIP firmware the only difference between
them is that the
Zyxel 2602HWL (note the L) version allows pass-trough to std. PSTN phone
line.
Curiously Broadbandbuyer.co.uk sells the HWL version cheaper then the HW.
There is an HW on Ebay right now at £145.
Incidentally the Draytek 2500V does have PSTN pass-trough.

I prefer the Draytek, even if it is little more expensive and I would be
happy to buy one on Ebay, where they go for around £120, less if you lucky.
Regards,
Martin
