ADSL Router for BT Broadband

I have been a ntl user for years and I have signed up for BT Broadband
as the result of a house move.

I have signed up for the basic BT Broadband package and am awaiting the
delivery of some, 'not too hot, I'm sure', usb modem (don't know the
details). Would anyone recommend an alternative cheap and cheerful adsl
router to replace the usb modem that will work with BT?

BT told me that the basic package won't support home networking. I'm
sure what they mean is they want to charge their customers more money
for not knowing what a router is (feel free to correct me if I am
wrong).

I have just parted with my trusty P75 box/router with two network cards
and the OS, Coyote Linux, running of a floppy disk...not exactly
supported by most ISPs?!

Thanks,

Chris

i've got a Netgear DG834, (also on BT). It took a couple of minutes to set
up and has worked faultlessly ever since.
It cost £70 or so when I bought it. I leave it on all the time and haven't
had any problems.
It's got 4 100 MBit ethernet ports. You can plug a wireless access point
into one of these if desired or buy the same model with a built in WAP.
Thoroughly recommended.

But these are popular products and there's plenty of choice, so I expect
you'll get lots of recommendations for other products as well.
Replacing any usb modem-type connection with a router is definitely the best
way to go - even to connect a single pc.

they supply the BT Voyager 205 router on the more expensive account,
which obviously does networking. Less than £20 on Ebay, worth
considering. Ebuyer.com usually have 1 or 4 port routers for under £30
too.

For something cheap and cheerful maybe the eBuyer SAMR-4114, cheap, gets
good user reviews. Might be worth keeping an eye on eBay to see if you
can get a "premium" brand model cheap?

No that's the size of it, they just won't offer support or anything, the
service will be just fine.

cheers,

You're right. Almost all ADSL routers will work fine with BT
Broadband, including those which incorporate NAT and a multi-port
switch. Strictly speaking the contract you sign with BT doesn't
permit you to do this, but given the privacy of the home I cannot see
how this would be policed.

I use this (SAMR-4114), it is absolutely fine for the money. It's dead
easy to set up, offers a basic firewall, NAT and a rather good Virtual
Server option which does port forwarding.

I have noticed that after a sudden power cut, it tends to forget how
many CAT5 cables it has plugged in to the built-in switch/hub. So
following resumption after a power cut, it seems pretty much random
how many of the computers regain their connection. The solution is
just to reboot the router, and for the money I'm not complaining.
