I currently have a Netgear DG834 wired ADSL modem router which has 4
ports. I really want to have 8 wired Cat5 connections.

Can someone recommend something that has similar capabilities but with
8 ports without going down the wireless route?

You could just retain the current router and buy a cheap 100Mbs switch.

Why not just daisy chain a six or eight port hub?

A quick Google got me a range at amazon starting as cheap as 9.95

Try - just as examples - no recommendation made

My thoughts too.

The commodity router chips are almost all certainly limited to 4 ports.

remember also that whilst 4x10Mbps HUB ports are fine on a router that
is going to serve the internet alone to a bunch of Windoesn't PCs, if
you want some serious file transfer between machines, 100Mbps is
minimum, and so is a switch.

Lot's of them will be turning up shortly on ebay for silly money as
companies go bust..

I used the 100Mbps 6 port Switcher option.

I took a feed off one of the router ports to feed the switcher so
leaving 5 ports for Ethernet use (other PCs, etc).

True, but there's nothing to stop a manufacturer building in a separate
switch chip. Some routers do this anyway (ie router chip with one LAN port
+ 5 port switch chip = router with 4 ethernet ports). It'd save money and
power over a separate switch (but probably not save money if you already
have the router).

If you can find a switch chip with 8 ports you may find a router having one
here:

Personally I'd just get a simple 8 port switch though

problem is, though most PCs are now equipped with Gigabit
NICs I can't think of a single domestic grade router with a
Gigabit switch.

Even the expensive Cisco routers I install at work only have 10/100
ports.

The Belkin N1 Vision (DSL version) has both Gigabit WAN & LAN (4) ports. At
around £100+ I guess it qualifies as a domestic grade router ;-)
