ADSL recommendation needed

Hello all,

I need your recommendations for an ADSL provider with the following:

- just ADSL (no switching phone providers or any of that nonsense)
- ADSLMax (up to 8mbps down/448kbps+ up)
- no bundled hardware (already have USB modem which is fine)
- no connection fee
- 6 months or less minimum contract (ideally)
~ 30GB download per month
- fast and reliable connection
- no port blocking/packet filtering
- ideally less than £25/month
- decent SMTP server
- binary newsgroups would be a bonus but not essential

I have previously used Namesco who are great, but their minimum contract
is 12 months. I'm not afraid to dabble with lesser known ISPs - I did
with Namesco (when they were NDO) and things worked out great.

Thanks in advance!

Also the ability to downgrade to something like 1-2mbps down/256kps up
and 10GB/month would be great.

Seems like Namesco are my best option, despite the 12 month contract.

How lazy are you! I suggest you use a web browser pointed to Google
and do some research.

No need for that attitude, no need at all!

John.

I'm with Be, on the Be unlimited up to 24meg, they do a slower up to 8meg as
well. 3 months notice contract.
I'm very happy with them.

I've heard things about Be/O2 recently (speed issues). Do they block P2P?

Just looked at their site and for "Be Value" (what I want) the minimum
contract is 12 months with 3 months cancellation notice which is
unacceptable.

https://www.bethere.co.uk/generalFAQ.do#faq29

I would consider ADSL2+ but don't want a router when there is only one
device requiring internet access and there are no USB ADSL2+ modems that
I can find.

Chill, Winston!

I have done reseach on Google but a) there are hundreds of ADSL ISPs and
b) I was after a personal recommendation.

The price compaison sites only list a dozen or so ISPs.

Even in the one device case I'd still recommend a router. Much easier to
know whats going on with the line, increased reliability of the connection
and it provides increased security by coming with NAT and a hardware
firewall. With a USB modem you have a direct connection to the internet -
anyone trying to hack into your public IP is actually hacking into your
computer. With a router you sit on a private network behind a hardware
firewall. USB modems don't come with any firewall so you'll be relying on a
software solution. Plus you get the added flexibility benefits such as when
the single computer is upgraded it might then be a wireless laptop.

And you can always turn it off when not required. Cheap too.

You mention P2P. I wouldn't want to run P2P with a USB modem. All those
people connecting directly to my computer rather than going through a single
locked down and specified port in the router firewall. No thanks.

Have a look at an Entanet supplier but they are having their own speed
issues at the moment. I'd be with O2 in a heartbeat if they didn't keep
pulling the your line is too long card.

What he said. I'd recommend a router is used for the same reasons.

Two sayings come to mind, "better the devil you know!" and "jumping out of
the frying pan into the fire!". You could migrate to another ISP only to
find yourself in all manner of trouble. You could loose a connection for
two weeks while the two ISP (who are supposed to be in the communications
industry) sort themselves out. You could have a poorer service (despite the
advertising blurb) - OK so you may not have a tie in but you'd still have to
go around the whole loop again.

I suppose you should ask yourself why you're wanting to move. A compelling
reason may be reasonable justification. Because there may be something
slightly better may not be justification.
