An ADSL Question - Simple I think

I've just been round at a mate who is converting from dial up to ADSL, I've set
up ADSL here with no issue but the first step failed at his location so I want
to ask an idiot style question. His new modem is not indicating detection of
ADSL on the BT line, the ISP swears the BT have enabled it now but when I
unplugged his microfilter and plugged a phone directly into the wall socket I
could detect no noise that I associate with ADSL being on a phone line.

Question - is lack of noise a reasonable indicator of ADSL not yet being
enabled, are there any other things that can be done before I go round with my
ADSL modem which is known to be working?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Don't complicate things by interfering, leave it to your friend to sort out.
You could always use a bit of common sence and plug your modem into his line
to see if it his modem at fault.
The ADSL light will come on once BT is ready.

No noise is not necessarily an indication that broadband hasn't been enabled
yet.

Have you installed filters on any equipment that is connected to the phone
line? I've found not having filters on, is sometimes enough for the modem
not to connect and act as if broadband hasn't been enabled. I tried to setup
my mates connection and he assured me he had connected the filters
downstairs. After a few hours of nothing, I had a look downstairs and found
the Skybox wasn't filtered. Put it on a filter and hey presto.

Also I've heard stories of BT enabling the wrong line at the exchange!!!

I'll revisit him on Wed with my modem which should give a go/nogo regarding ADSL
detection then trace the other possibilities. I'll also check that there is
nothing odd like a second "Master" socket fitted, I guess that might load ADSL a
little too much but be tolerable for phone use, he is out in the sticks with a
1M limit so not the perfect starting point. The ADSL was supposed to be enabled
Monday, we shall see. Filters, he said he had fitted 3, need to check the
details tomorrow.
I'd half hoped there was a BT number (like 17070 or * # 001 #) which would
automatically report back what the ADSL status was from their perspective, seems
logical that there should be, ho hum.

Thanks again.

Also remember that a filter at each end of the line ( a mate had a
extention plugged into a filter downstairs, and another filter at the
other end upstairs) will cancel each other out.

In article <vA6Gf.9707$(E-Mail Removed)>, says...

You won't unless the ADSL Modem is plugged into another socket and is
active.

If you have no ADSL Modems/routers either plugged in and switched on,
you can use a phone without a microfilter and not hear the noise.

Not if you didn't also have the ADSL Modem connected to the phone line
and trying to connect.

If it was anything like my experience,
1 order broadband
2 modem gets delivered plug in... nothing... ADSL light off
3 get letter welcoming me to broadband...... still nothing......ADSL
light off
4 phone-call from BTbroadband welcoming me to broadband!........still
nothing......ADSL light off
5 BT swears broadband enabled................still nothing......ADSL
light off
6 3 weeks later broadband works............. yeehaaaaaaa... ADSL light
on!!
7 2 days later broadband stops again..........ADSL light off again!!
8 get bill from BT for 1 months broadband (quickly sorted!)

It was all eventually sorted out. , BT broadband had been told by BT
wholesale that broadband had been enable, but Siemens hadn't even put in the
equipment (it was dumped on the floor in the exchange!) then when it was
finally enabled, it had a major fault.
It wasn't just BT it was AOL and all ISP's as well,
Funny all the people I knew who were waiting were told by their different
ISPs .. your broadband is working.

And if you BOTH switch off the circuit breaker and unplug the lamp then
the light will come on? AMAZING!
