I have ADSL at 2mbps and i am with sky, i have signed up with the
'upto 8meg' package. Until recently i thought that the speed i was
getting was becuase of my distance from the exchange. Now the guy next
door just got broadband with talk talk, with an upto 8meg package and
he is getting 6mbps. Added to that i get constant dropouts and his
connection is stable. Now the equipment difference cannot be that
great to cause a 4mbps differece can it?. Oh and according to BTs
online speed thing, with his phone number he should get around 4mbps
and so should i with my phone number(that has changed recently though,
i should now be gettting max 512k, but i am already getting 2mbps?).
Yet he is getting more. We are both connected to the same exchange, so
what could be the problem, and the bigger issue what do i say to my
ISP to get them to sort it out.

Nope, but the line quality can.

Does your equipment tell you any information about your line
characteristics (Line attenuation, CRC errors and SNR margin). If it
does it would help if you could include some of that info.

Did you look into it ? The info isn't a secret you know.

LMAO @Talk Talk but never mind.

How do you KNOW he is actually getting 6Mbps ? Did he ever run a test ?

That could potentially be due to *anything*. Probably not as it happens but
don't expect SKY to bust a gut to find the answer. They provide a cheap service
for ppl who like cheap stuff.

Why don't you sign up to a 1st rate decent ISP instead of a toy one ?

They'll fix it.

line stats are as follows:

Attenuation: 54db (the other guys is the same)
Noise Margin: 10db (his is somehting like 20db)

I am using DMT to get CRC errors and thing, but will have to wait a
bit for that.
I have messed with the Target SNR and set it to 0db, and i get sync at
3328kbps and actual internet speed of around 2600kbps. And his actual
speed is around 5.5mbps goes up and down.

stable connection, no drop out and the speed that i get is veryt
constant. And his actual speed is around 5.5mbps goes up and down.

What would the effect be on the Noise Margin and Attenuation if Sky
was throttling the bandwidth?

What do you get if you use the test socket behind the master socket?

The basics: have you fitted filters for every phone, fax, sky receiver?
Have you tried plugging the router into the phone test socket (behind
the removable plate on the master phone socket)?
Have you tried disconnecting the bell circuit to extensions (which can
cause problems)?

Also, consider fitting a filtered faceplate, if you do not have one).
From a few places, including www.clarity.it

I have the sky 2meg package (with 63.5db attenuation and 12.7db noise)
there are no problems.

That would have got you a fixed 1Mbps and no more back in the day. The
lower your downstream attenuation the better. The higher your SNR, the
more tolerance there will be to fluctuations in line quality (but your
sync rate will be lower).

By comparison my stats are as follows:

Attenuation: 44.0 dB
Noise Margin: 6.1 dB

I sync between 4-5Mbps and my throughput tends to fluctuate between 3-4Mbps

Your speed is pretty consistent with the stats you're providing. In
order to better this you're looking at trying some of the wiring
suggestions as suggested by others who've contributed to this thread.

Possibly. Are you connecting to your router wiredly or wirelessly?

That particular online speed thing is an educated guess.

His and your lines are by definition, different pairs of copper wires
connected to your exchange. Alas, BT are under no obligation to provide any
kind of minimum broadband speed, so it's unlikely they will do anything
about it unless there is a fault. The best thing you can do is eliminate
wiring on your premises as a source of any problems [as others have
suggested], or get cable broadband.
