ADSL plus Cable with BGP - Would this be a pain?

Out of curiosity, if I had both cable and adsl setup would it be a
pain in the butt to use them simultaneously? Whenever I've had 2
connections, I've always just used one for each machine.

>> Cable and ADSL providers choose to provide a default route so they

will not work on a single system.

So for example, both cable and ADSL are plugged into a machine:
eth0 via DHCP takes a cable IP
eth1 via DHCP takes an adsl IP
eth2 offers 192.168.0.0/24 to the local network via DHCP

Then somehow the Linux machine is setup to favour cable, but if the
port is nearing capacity (say 300kbps out or 1mbps in), additional
requests get sent out and back using adsl.

Has anyone setup a howto for this, or seen anything that does this
from companies like D-Link, 3Com etc.?

You can configure two parent proxies in squid... and use the timing
mechanism to use the less loaded ISP ... (the squid proxy that responds
first is deemed to be less loaded)
or just let it share 50.50 constantly.

Thats about the only way to do it.

well there used to be , they would have to use parent proxies to get this to
work, but who wants to use a proxy ?

Sorry ,just read the subject ...

No you cant run BGP because you arent running a suitable router.

I dont think many run BGP on linux.. normally you use a router like a cisco
or something.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't found anything very supporting through
my searches either. Seems like there's an untapped market for techs,
geeks and gamers everywhere. I can think of a number of people who
would subscribe to multiple ISP's for performance, if not simply for
redundancy (work at home).

Yes you could have two links.

You can run a web server on one link, and do work/use the internet on the
other normally.

You cant get the web server working if its link is down, but you can
always be a client on either link ...

And there is BGP for linux ?

www.zebra.org is a project to do BGP as a unix subsystem.

with a write up about how to do it for linux at
