ADSL Networking

I have a PCI ADSL modem (Conexant) which works fine on a single PC.

I now need to network the ADSL connection to several computers; some distant
enough to need wireless connectivity.

Do I need to buy a combined modem/router/wi-fi box (and ditch the PCI modem)
or can I derive a signal from the PC to make the ADSL connection part of the
network by connection to router/wi-fi?

I realise the PC containing the PCI modem would need to be ON to provide
anytime access from the network clients but I could save £30 by avoiding
buying a router/wi-fi with integral ADSL modem.

Thanks.

Roger

you could, but to be brutally honest, it would probably be
FAR easier, and a LOT less hassle going the router (sic)
route ;-)
In most folks view, well worth the extra expense..

I think that ditching the PCI card (or keeping it for emergencies, as I do)
and getting a wireless modem/router would be by far the best solution.

If you really don't want to do that, another way which *might* work is to
set up a wireless LAN using a wireless access point and wireless cards in
all your PCs. Then use software such as WinRoute (I think you can still
download a 'lite' version for free) to share the connection with the other
PCs. I did this on a temporary basis - with a wired LAN centred on a hub -
prior to buying my wireless router, and it worked ok. I don't see why it
shouldn't also work with a wireless network.

Yes, you could buy a Wireless Access Point and connect that to your PC -
which as you say you'll then have to leave that on all the time.

Personally, I'd go for the combined modem/router/wi-fi solution and get
something like a Belkin 7630 or a Netgear 834G

Tim,

I`m trying to help a mate to set up a network similar to what Roger has
in mind. Now this Winroute looks to be a possible solution but I`ve been
unable to find a free version. Would you have a link or even a saved copy
you could email to me?

Thanks
Fred

if you're buying wireless kit anyway, why not go the whole hog... there
is a small saving but if everything depends on the one PC being up and
running, what happens if you ever install s/w that needs a reboot, or
it has to be repaired for some hardware problem... Peter M.

Thanks, chaps. The combo modem/router/wi-fi is obviously the answer.
