Hello

Appreciate any feedback and help on setting up new home network. The
house is fully wired with new Cat5 cabling. I want two PCs (diif
floors) sharing internet, files and printer. Would also like to add a
wireless AP for my laptop.

Here's the setup I am contemplating:

ADSL -> Cat5 -> 10/100 Ethernet Router/Hub/Switch (Draytek 2600?) ->
Cat5

-> PCs and printer (plus potentially also Cat5 to wireless AP

Will this work?

Also, will adding wireless slow down wired internet speed?

Thank you in advance

By it's self a wireless connection will not affect the internet speed
though the speed is shared across all computers using the ADSL connection,
so connecting another computer by Wireless or cable will devide from the
baundwidth. I my self like to wonder arounf the house and garden with an
iPaq pocket PC connected to the internet via wireless.

Yes it'll work and it'll make the people selling you the computer equipment
very happy.
The two computer can be connected directly using a crossover cable. The
wireless & printer can be server from this computer.

My personal set-up involves having a computer always on and connected to
the internet & wireless. This computer acts as the firewall for the ADSL
and Wireless & is also a webserver.

Dunno about that. I'm a wireless man myself. Why not just ditch the cat5
and go for a wireless router? I've just got a Netgear DG824M which seems to
work flawlessy so far.

The bottleneck will always be your ADSL, presumably 500k? Even wireless-B
goes at 11megabits a second which 4 or 5 times faster than your ADSL line

Yes. You can get an ADSL modem/router/switch/wireless-access-point all
in one if you want to save on wires.

No. Nor will it slow down your network (if it is a switch rather than an
old fashioned hub). Even if it could (and it won't, honest), the speed
of a wireless network is far faster than the fastest ADSL anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have most of the hardware - only need the router which is likely to
be the Vigor 2600G to add the wireless. Cat5 needed (already in the
house) since PCs are on diff floors in the house.
