Would an ADSL modem/wireless router combi thingy bought in the US work here?

Pete.

Probably, provided it can be configured for PPPoA and either VCMux or
LLC encapsulation.

However, the firmware will likely be set for the US regulatory
domain, which has 11 channels (the UK allows 13) and a maximum 1W
radiated power (the UK allows 100mW).

I think you'll be OK - and unless you cause interference no-one will
be hunting you down...

Hope this helps

Maybe, but my modem/router was provided with an external DC PSU which was
240V, 13A 3-pin module. I imagine the OP's will have a similar PSU so at
the very least this will need replacing, even if it is compatible
comms-wise.

Well, that would be good, The reason I ask is that our current router just
isn't powerful enough, we get a lot of signal dropouts!!

Pete.

Most PSU's are 100-250V input.

BT has changed their setup and apparently PPPoE (as used in US) will now
work on BT lines too.

Martin

Essentially no lower-end stuff except stuff designed for the travel market
is.
It adds to the cost.
In bulk, plug-in fixed voltage adaptors of low wattage cost not much more
than a pound.

Variable voltage ones are maybe a fiver.
