Hi

Ive got a BT Voyager USB modem. Ive noticed that my IP address can change
when I start my PC, as my modem being USB has to re-connect....

if I switch to using a modem/router because it is not powered from USB, so I
assume when it connects to my ISP that so long as it remains powered up my
IP address remains static as such.. am I correct?

Cheers,

Mark.

It will generally be more static, yes.

Depends on your ISP. When I was with BTO they implemented a system to
tear down the connection and force it to reconnect with a new IP
address. If its that important, you could get an ISP that offers a
static IP address.

My router seems to have an uptime of anything from minutes to 10 days or
so, and each reconnect will give me a new IP on Pipex - I think the
reconnections are due to a crap BT network...

Depending on your intended usage (do you need to run a server ?) you
could still get away with a dynamic IP address if you use something like
dyndns.org to update your current IP. It hasn`t let me down yet when i`ve
needed to access my machine remotely :-)
