ADSL modem problem

I have a NetComm ADSL modem, only a few months old. Twice recently, its
settings have become corrupted overnight. What is the best way to counter
this? Is it likely to be power surge or data? The modem apparently has
its own NAT firewall, which I am not using at the moment. Should I
activate it? What is it for?

Have you checked for firmware upgrade?

No, I didn't think of that. I can't find out the version installed. but a
new version was released about when I bought the modem. Allowing that the
vendor had had it in stock before the price rise, I am downloading the
latest now.
