ADSL max reducing line speed?

I just put in a query regarding increasing my line speed with adsl max.
(plusnet, they want £5.99 to upgrade)

Anyway the price matters not. What I am curious about is their reply they
say that my line may be able to synch at 1.5Mb but also it may only synch at
even lower than 512KB.

If my line currently works at 512KB/sec I don't understand how adsl max
could possibly reduce the line speed.

Glad they're not slapping too much on... and the 250 and 500 kbps do have
a 5.00 +VAT fee from BT anyway, so not bad, if compared with 0.00 charged
by BTW for higher speeds, but no doubt the full 5.99 taken as admin fee !

It looks for a stable connection, and can work in smaller increments, so
if you have errors reported by your router, it could arguably drop that
speed to get zero errors over a particular time period, and become the
"stable" speed (even if it is worse than you get now)... With having
the relatively high attenuation, it could be slower, so maybe PN has
to warn customers lest they get regraded and get v. unhappy after!!

On the BT checker it says I can maybe et 1.5Mb or more. It also says that
it takes the download figures for one month and averages it out for the best
speed and then it settles at that amount.
Just waiting for them to get back to me as to whether if I do get lower
speeds, can I go back to previous product and will they charge me again. I
don't mind paying the initial £5.99 but I don't want to have to pay again to
go back if necessary.

Actually, can you go back ?

I've got a very solid 500k connection with 63dB atten, and 19 dB SNR.

The checker says I might get 1.5 Mb/s. Presumably 1 Mb/s would reduce
SNR to 12-13 dB, so 1.5 would be 9ish dB and that might produce a
flaky connection ?

Rather than over do it, I'd like to simply ask for a 1 Mb/s
connection, rather than 'Max', but I doubt that option would
be easy to obtain ?

So we are basically saying that ADSL Max is a load of crap then?
Why didn't BT get on with ADSL2, rather than farting about with a system
taht is a waste of time?

Because this is a stop gap until they can get the new equipment in?

And to be honest lines greater than 2km are going to see little, if any
improvement with ADSL2+. The line that have low SNR on 512k aren't going to
see improvements in speed until fibre is rolled out to the street cabinet or
house.

We aren't saying anything of the sort.

Most people will see an improvement with ADSLMax.

But not everybody, and a very few may even see a reduction.

adslmax isnt some new technology. its just ADSL uncapped.
so that makes it about 15 years old..

It's adaptive ADSL - both directions.
