ADSL Max bandwidth estimates

Are bandwidth estimates now being returned by the BT checker such as "your
line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of
3Mbps or greater" just rough estimates based on attenuation, or do they use
SNR data?

http://www.bt.com/broadband/

I get the above with SNR 30db Attenuation 44db.

Hehe.

"A crude estimate of what your line is capable of is 570kbps"

SNR 10dB Attenuation 63dB

Says 1.5mb or above for me. 58db down, 63db up.
Would be nice to get something faster but I am not overly bothered. I don't
mind waiting 6 months or whatever. I am just glad to be able to get
broadband at all.

I suspect the BT predictions are just made on attenuation, since numbers
with no adsl give similar results to neighbours with. If so, the BT
estimate is about as useful as the prediction "You should live to 60 or
more".

with SNR of 10 and Attenuation of 40, I too got 570kbits/sec, even with my
connection currently at 5.5Mbits/sec ;-)

A crude estimate of what your line is capable of is 8192kbps (kilo bits per second).

snr 29.1db, attn 15db

Now that's interesting......

I'm currently on a very stable 1Mbps connection (53dB att. and 15dB SNR)
but I had to have a manual order put through to get this (BT's line
checker at the time said I should get 256Kbps or possibly 512Kbps!).

BT's line checker now says that "your line should be able to support a
potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 500Kbps or greater."

According to the SNR/attn. based checker at
http://212.23.23.177/calc.asp I should get around 2200Kbps!

OK, I accept that 2200Kbps (or even my current 1Mbps) is indeed "500Kbps
or greater" but somehow I don't think that's what the BT line checker
has in mind in it's statement!!

I suspect the BT line checker is simply returning statistical estimates
based only on Attenuation, not SNR.

If so, they mean something like "a line in your attenuation range has a 90%
chance of supporting an ADSL Max broadband line rate of 500Kbps or greater."

Not usefully predictive information for the individual line.

If I am right, we should be able to map attenuation to the checker
prediction, so results on that are welcome, we currently have:

Attenuation => checker
44db => 3M+
53db => 500K+
