ADSL Line dropping question

I have my Belkin router connected to a BT extension rather than the master
socket.
Once or twice per day the connection fails and I have to restart the router.
Not the end of the world, but a pain with an overnight download.
Is this problem more likely to be a fautly router, my use of the extension
socket, or a line problem with BT/Nildram?

I can't easily plug into the master socket to check, (don't ask) and I don't
have another router to try instead.

I'm just asking to find out the most likely cause of the problem before
further investigation

I have a 1meg connection, and it easily maintains maximum speed when working

Cheers
Steve

Probably the use of the extension socket.

However:

a) make sure you are using the latest firmware for the Belkin

b) Log into your router and go to: http://192.168.2.1/adsl_status_main.stm
(assuming 192.168.2.1 is the address of your router) and post the figures
under "Operation Data" here..

Regards
Sunil

Thanks Sunil.
I can't find 'Operation Data' listed anywhere within the router statues
pages. Which speccific figures am I looking for?

I'll update my firmware later this evening.

Thanks for your time.

Login to your router and then go to this url:
http://192.168.2.1/adsl_status_main.stm - on the Belkin 7630 its a "hidden
page" and not "publically" linked to.. so you will have to copy and paste it
into your browser window

It will say something like:

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 31 dB 21.5 dB
Output Power 12 dBm 20 dBm
Attenuation 28 dB 42 dB

(thats what mine says anyway)

A High Noise Margin is better
A Low Attenuation is better.

The latest firmware helps some people with disconnection issues so its worth
trying.

Sunil

Here's what mine says:

Noise Margin
24 dB
16 dB

Output Power
12 dBm
18 dBm

Attenuation
31.5 dB
58 dB

Is this good or bad?

Steve

It should be fine for a 1MB connection - I suggest you try updating the
firmware next to see if it makes any difference.

If not, then you can try a new filter and/or replacing (or omitting - it is
a wireless router!) the extension wiring

Sunil

.....and if you have Sky, try unplugging that from the phone line as it
sometimes causes the connection to drop.
