What is the current maximum line distance for a good ADSL connection in
the UK?

Depends on how wet the aluminium is.......

Anywhere between 0 & 6-7 kms should cover it...

In theory 6 km, but what actually matters is attenuation and frequency
response as well. Some lines longer than 6km are OK, some s less than 6km
are not.

It's Quality that counts, an illustration - everyone will tell you that for
10baseT ethernet the limit is 100m including patch leads but (in
desperation) I've linked two hubs on 300m of cat5 cable. It worked just
fine.

Distance is only a rough guide, if the signal is good it will work.

I am 5.65 cable length from my exchange and BT says `no chance` of Broadband
due to line noise.
As BT`s now advertising the limit at 6km can i pressurise them into
improving the quality of my line??

You can try but don't expect much chance of success. Only the very very
politely persistent have succeeded.

BT are only obliged to keep the copper line suitable for voice calls.

Line noise is probably caused by bad connections which have no real effect
on voice so unless they are feeling generous, they won't do much, unless you
can get British Gas to dig up the cable by accident !
