What is the current distance limit and is there likely to be an increase in
it anytime soon. Also whatever happened to Rate Adaptive broadband ?

Doubt it

All 512kb/s stuff has been RADSL for quite a while now. I take it you
mean ADSL, not the loose general term 'broadband' whicb also covers
other technologies...!

It's not actually based on a line distance, but rather the line quality.
Older and poor quality lines can drop off earlier than 6km (average) and we
have even got a handful of customers who are further than 6km as the lines
are in excellent condition.

RADSL has been the norm for 512k services for over 2 years now. ISP's can
buy wholesale from BT a 512k ADSL offering, but i don't know anyone who
does, especially as it costs a bit more for nowt extra.

Just to add to the other answers about it being line quality (<60dB) and not
distance (approx 6Km) that counts...

BT have announced some limited trials to see if they can extend this range
further though.

Do you have a URL for this info?

TIA

It was on http://www.bb4mk.org/bt_long_reach_trial.htm though much of the
information seems to have been removed.

However, it looks like BT plan to test two different "long reach"
technologies, starting in January 2004 with approx 20 houses in Milton
Keynes being fitted with computers and ADSL equipment by BT so they can
remotely test/monitor the results.

After a couple of weeks, the supplied modem will swapped for a different
one.

However, during BT's testing, the system will not provide any form of
Internet access, it is purely there so BT can evaluate how technically
viable a "long reach" service would be and they will remove their equipment
at the end of the trial.

Regards
Sunil

So, maybe their hopes are not very high!

All the best
