ADSL first time Ok?

Dial up has satisfied my requirements for about 10 years and I still
don't need broadband. However, I'm under pressure from my wife to
provide faster WEB facilities and so I will need to move to ADSL. In
most of the usenet groups that mention ADSL broadband conversions I
see mainly bad news. How many conversions work first time? Just a
approx % will be useful.

I would say that the vast majority goes through fine - there are some
3000-odd new connections per week and the problems you see here probably
represent a fraction of a percent of the ADSL connections in the country.

When you mention conversions, are you meaning from ISDN/Home Highway ?
If not, then activation of ADSL is typically problem-free. I'd be very
surprised with hundreds of thousands of users, if a small portion hadn't
had a problem of some sort, and those would be ones mostly mentioned, not
the majority which went smoothly. Peter M.

"Conversion", as used here, usually applies to ISDN/Home Highway to
ADSL. This is NOT that common but does need BT and the ISP to cooperate.

Adding ADSL to a normal phone line is pretty straightforward.

over 97% would by my guess. The BT pre-qualification limits per
September 2004 were conservative. If you get the "Very unlikely"
message on the www.bt.com/broadband checker it may not be as good.

Your wiring and your PC kit can be an issue, or course.

No, I'm think of going from dial up to HomeOffice500 or 1000. Both
look simple and quite economical.

My changeover at AOL was exceptionally smooth as also was a friend's with
little or no PC knowledge. Another friemd with BT had a number of problems
which took some time to resolve.
