ADSL on disconnected line?

I am posting this from an ADSL connection on a line that has been
"disconnected" (at my request). Picking up the phone just gets a solid
tone - is this the normal case with a disconnected line? I assumed it
would simply be silent/dead.

The ADSL is still working as normal however (as proven by this post).

Can anybody tell me if this is normal, if the ADSL will stay on the
line and usable, even though the line has been "disconnected", or if
it's just temporary till BT remove the ADSL (due to the line
disconnection, rather than a request from an ISP).

Thanks.

The most likely explaination is that the ADSL is in the process of being
disconnected, and shortly you will find that you will no longer be able to
connect.

I'm not sure about the tone on the line, AFAIK a dead line has no tone,
although I don't work for BT and might be wrong on that!

I think they D/C the wires in the lil green box somewhere when you are
D/C's, but it takes time

AIUI there is a difference between a disconnected line and a 'dead'
line.

I can't comment on the ADSL question (I use cable for broadband) but I
did have one of my BT lines disconnected approx 16 months ago. There
was a continuous tone on that line until just last week.

AIUI when you terminate your line, first it gets tuned off, so you cant make
ore receive calls, (you then get the solid tone you are getting)
the card still stays connected until BT need the port for someone else (Or
they have a tidy up, or they need to use the pair of wires from the exchange
to your nearest BT distribution point)

I guess as the ADSL is a separate thing, if this is being paid for
separately, and you are still connected to your line card in the exchange,
then it will continue to work!

We had a 256k leased line like this, but it actually stayed connected for
over a year after we ceased it! (I called BT when it stopped working to
report a fault (I didn't know it was supposed to be ceased at this point)
and they told me that the line was ceased over a year ago!

Sparks...

They will catch up with you, may take days, weeks or even months but it will
eventually go the way of your telephone line, I'm afraid...

With recent policies, even when a line is disconnected/usage is discontinued
all jumpering is left in place, in some cases giving the continual tone,
others battery blow & others just a dead line. But over time this
eventually gets broken down somewhere...

It's supposed to cut down on work done by the field staff, but in fact just
leads to more confusion & work but I must say occasionally it works well &
new users get service in very short order when everything has been left in
place...
