ADSL bt engineer visit

I have checked bt line checker for a family member
this is the result

Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to get
Broadband from BT with speeds up to 1Mb, which is up to 20 times
faster than dial-up. At the moment, your telephone line is unable to
support our 2Mb speed broadband package. Also, due to the length of
your line, an engineer visit may be required to set up your broadband
service.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to
confirm if your line is suitable for the speed of service you wish to
order.

my query is if we order from any other isp who pays for the engineers
visit and what is the likely cost
thanks

An engineer will only be dispatched if the line fails to operate
correctly (or at all) at 1Mbit. BT wholesale will pay for this unless
the reason the line is not operational is due to your internal wiring or
your own equipment, at which point you could be charged. Most people in
this situation don't have a problem and activation proceeds without the
need for an engineer visit.

You dont pay, but it is blue murder trying to persuade some ISPs to pass on
the necessary visit over to BT.
It took me ninety minutes to get a tiscali advisor to refer the situation to
BT, similar experieinces with Demon.

Some ISPs are excellent for going the extra mile, but they cost extra. AAISP
is one of those, the prices are about two years out of date, but they will
push the boat out and go the extra mile to get you broadband.

I think in terms of regular ISPs and anticipating a problem, i hate to say
it, but BT themselves might be the better ISP. BT Wholesale is supposed to
operate as a seperate company, and not give preference, in reality though,
it takes less head banging to get a line issue sorted out with BT ISP then
none BT ISP.

Just my experieince, i am sure others here have had the opposite
experieince/.

find the incoming line and plug his modem into it, if it works he
leaves. If not he tries to make it work. (bit of a summary).

Tiscali - dialup speeds at Broadband prices, see

AOL - the unlimited ISP of choice for heavy downloaders.

It may look that simple, but it's not, if the line passes at the test
socket on the NTE he will more than likely give some advice as to what
you can do to make it work over your internal wiring, if you want him to
deal with it himself then it becomes chargable .

If it fails at the test socket then the engineer will investigate
further, looking for a better cable path (ADSL wise) between your
exchange & your house, this can be quite complex or quite simple, each
case needs to be taken on it's own merits.

So it's not a quick in , APTS & out (I wish it were......)

You're my kind of end user ;-)

Honestly the number of end users offering cuppas is far out weighed by
the number who don't. Funny thing is that the nice ones (offering
cuppas) will all be on the same day, so by the end of it you're having
to reluctantly turn them down.
