ADSL and exchange disconnection

I have an ADSL line, with very few voice calls made on it.

I forgot to pay my BT bill and BT prevented me from dialling any numbers,
however I could still receive calls.

A few weeks after, I couldn't receive inbound calls. "The number you have
called in temporarily out of order" would be repeated by BT.

I have since paid my bill, but I asked the operator not to lift the
restriction. She confirmed, if I don't lift the restriction, then I don't
pay line rental.

Is there anyway I can still have ADSL but not pay line rental? I have been
told that my line has been terminated at the exchange, but I can still use
DSL, (I'm using it right now!).

Has anyone been in this situation before?

Even if you bar incoming calls you would still have to pay BT line rental..

No.

A mate of mine had his phoneline cut off but was still able to use adsl for
3 months until they cut that off.

Initially non-paid lines are first barred to outgoing calls, to reduce
the credit risk, and then soft-disconnected, which is what happened to
you.

You've now paid, but if you hadn't, you'd have been disconnected from
the exchange at your local cabinet and/or pole/distribution point. Your
DSL would have been ceased shortly afterwards, because there's no point
providing service on disconnected lines.

If you let your line get to the hard-disconnection stage then you'd
probably have to pay another DSL activation fee as well as whatever BT
wanted to charge you for the reconnection.

Something for nothing? I don't think so. Your situation seems to have been
arrived at after an unusual sequence of events and they probably just haven't
realised yet.

no harm in asking. Thanks guys for your answers. Will ring up BT and ask
them them to send dd mandate form to prevent reoccurence of same situation!

The fact that your line rental includes about a fivers worth of free calls
implies we are paying for more than the line.

Some coordinated oftel campaign may be in order - someone elses job though
;-)
