Certainly some USB modems emulate an ISDN connection and so connect on
startup.

Although not ADSL enabled until next week, I have installed an adsl modem on
my Win2k machine ready. My question is whether ADSL is 'always on' whenever
I start Windows? As part of the modems initialisation, does it automatically
connect to my ISP?

The reason I ask this is because after installing the drivers for the modem,
I have a desktop icon which has a 'connect' option in it's right click menu
much like my dialup connection has at the moment.

Thanks,
Wayne.

Thanks.

It's an internal PCI modem by the way and my connection is with
Freedom2Surf.

Well its not always on like cable. But you can set w2k to load the dialler
on startup and have it checked to connect automatically when you start up.

Hiya,

You can set your system up to do this quite easily, it won't do it out the
box, but if you take a look at :
http://www.btinternet.com/~jamesagmo...sDialFrame.htm

You'll find full details of how to do this, what Internal PCI Modem do you
have if you don't mind me asking?

Kind Regards,

Thanks, I'll take a look at that now.

The modem I have is an MRI IDSL01:

In article <ZM_wb.8193$(E-Mail Removed)>,
(E-Mail Removed), a.k.a wh says...

Right, AIUI, an ADSL connection is 'always' on because your modem
(whilst powered) has a permanent link straight into the exchange.

This does *not* mean you are connected to your ISP, as you have not
requested, nor authenticated yourself onto their systems until a 'dial-
up' request is made, hence the icon on your desktop from which to do
this.

You may connect and disconnect from your ISP at your leisure, the modem
will stayed linked (or synchronised) to the exchange all the while it is
powered up and connected to the phone line.
