My cable connection through Adelphia started slowing down about Friday. By
Monday it had slowed down to about 185 kb/s. I talked to two different
Adelphia techs and finally set up an appointment. I tested it yesterday
under Slackware (three different installs, Knoppix 3.7, Slax and my MSwin
2000 partition. MSwin was the fastest but all were very slow. Pings were
very slow. A ping into my computer showed lost packets.

Today (Tuesday) at first everything was blindingly fast. I tested under most
of the variety of OS' listed above. Then things slowed way down. Then they
came up again half way. I have no clue, and Adelphia had no clue, what was
wrong.

Adelphia did come up with a neat testing site. Visit http://toast.net, and
when the first screen comes up select "Performance Test" in the upper right
corner. When that screen comes up select a combination like "Shuttle" and
"Space Port USA." The selections available seem to change dynamically.
After you run the test you get a throughput test. Mine jumped way up and
just now it is back down to 180KB again. Ran it again and it jumped up to
2200kb. I have no clue why it jumps up and down. Network load should not
cause such wild variations from minute to minute.

Did anyone else experience unusually slow throughput this weekend?

Remember that you share your bandwidth with your neighbors. Also try

I work for MediaCom and that site is governed by the website that you
are testing from. I have found www.cnet.com with the bandwidth tester to
be better.
