Adding wireless cpability to current router

I am using a Linux box (micro version - boot from Floppy disk) as a router
for my home network. The high speed cable modem is hooked to the Linux box
and this in turn is connected to a 4-port hub. I can access Internet from
PCs hooked up to the ports from the hub.

What is the economic way to add wireless capability to the system so that I
can access internet via my laptop which already has a wireless adapter ?

Is a Wireless router an overkill ? Is a wireless access point (which appears
to cost the same or more than the wireless router) a solution ? Can Linux
support both wired and wireless adapters ? i.e. can I just add a wireless
network adapter card on the Linux box and turn it into an access point ?
which solution would be more economic and/or easier to set up ?

Any help/suggestion is appreciated.

I bought a cheap wireless router and placed it between my Linux firewall and
the cable modem. I then use a VPN to connect to my local lan. I also have
128 bit WEP enabled.
