Adding TCP/IP

I have a laptop with a built-in ethernet port. The port
is recognized as a Network Adapter under Device Manager.
However, when im trying to give the computer an IP
address, I right-click on Network Neighborhood and bring
up the configuration, and none of the TCP/IP protocols
list my specific network adapter. They only list dial up
adapters. When i try to add a TCP/IP protocol, it adds
another dial up adapter and doesn't give me the option to
add this particular network adapter. How do i get my
network adapter to show up here?

Does it show the adapter ip configuration when you type in "winipcfg" at the
run prompt?
