adding a router/print server to my ADSL-modem/router

Hi all,

I've got a ADSL-modem router+WiFi from my new ISP.
This new router has only two ethernet ports and
I have 5 computers. One other problem, I must share
my printer too.

Connecting computers to my new router works fine.
Connecting my new router LAN with a crossed cable to
my old router/print server WAN ( SMC 4 ports) causes problems
with sending posting to newsgroups!? Everything else seems OK.
Very strange is that this only happens with windows
and linux. BeOS ( the Be Operating System ) has no problem
at all. ( Don't ask me why )

Current situation :
New modem/router connected to the net
one linux computer connected to the new modem/router LAN
SMC router/print-server WAN connected to the new modem/router LAN

New modem/router configured to give DHCP is OK.
SMC router/print server is connected to printer LPT.
SMC router/print server LAN connected to BeOS computer.

What I need now is:
Connecting another windows or linux computer to the SMC
and solve the posting to newsgroups problem. HELP!

Configure this network so that I can use the printer
from the computer which is connected to the new modem/router.
( if this works, I guess I can print fromn the WiFI connected
computers too )

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Edmund

Don't know exactly what equipment you have but here is typically how one
would go about this:

Either replace ISP provided modem/router with a DSL modem only with thernet
output OR configure the ISP supplied unit as a bridge device only and
disable Wifi;

The ISP will pickup the MAC address of the DSL modem and assign the proper
IP to it.

Then install a combination router/switch/wireless AP device set up to obtain
its WAN IP from the host (DHCP) and also to act as a LAN DHCP server, Wifi
access point and support NAT (Network Address Translation). You will then
plug your local devices into the integrated switch unless those devices
have Wifi in which case you can connect wirelessly (be sure to configure
WPA2 security). Configure your devices to use DHCP to obtain their dynamic
IP addpress and other settings from the DHCP server.

Its pretty simple using this mode and once you have the devices connected,
including the printer(s), all should be able to "see" the printer and use
it as a shared device.

Hope this helps.

Replacing is definitely not my first choice for a number of reasons:
ISP's don't give any warranty with other then their own equipment.
It has a phone line in it too and even ( not used a TV line )
Cannot find much on reconfiguring as bridge here either.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think there must be a way to
configure my equipment so that it works the way I want it.
After all my BeOS computer does all I want as it is now.

I am sure I am not the first one trying to put a router
behind another router.
Thanks anyway
