Have 1 XP pc and 6 98SE pc's networked in my home (old pc's, kids etc.) and
all works well for everything accept one pc (that used to also work well
until hd went toast and had to be swapped out).
On the one problem pc which has a fresh install of 98SE, when I connect the
ethernet cable it appears the XP pc is causing my "router" to "do something"
not normally seen. To be specific, the router flashes all it's indicator
lights then sequentially walks down the connections (individual lights flash
above each connection) periodically, e.g. approx. every 10 seconds. While
doing this, the network is not available, lasting about 1-2 seconds. The XP
also pops up a little balloon saying "cable to connected" yet at same time
can access all shares on all pcs including trouble one!?
It appears the XP pc is doing/searching for something but what and why?
If I disconnect the XP pc, problem goes away. If I disconnect one of the
other 98SE pc's it remains. Problem only seems to be with the one pc!!! As
mentioned it has fresh clean install, I've changed nics with no change in
behaviour etc. etc.
As mentioned network itself seems to still work fine even with problem pc
attached allowing all shares etc. across all pc's even the problem one so
....
Any ideas?
