Adding another computer

I am just about to take delivery of a new PC but would like to keep my
existing PC for the kids. What I would ideally like to do is to use my ADSL
connection on both PCs, independent of which one is turned on at the time.
Presumably this means I need a router.

My question is - at the moment I have a USB modem going into the PC, and a
DLink WAP connected via Ethernet to allow my laptop to share the internet
connection. Can I just buy a combined modem/router so that I use an
ethernet feed to the two PCs and another feed to the WAP? Is that the best
way to go? Which modem / router?

I also use MSN Messenger a lot and have heard of problems if the router is
not uPNP enabled. Anyone know anything about that?

TIA
Adrian

I would recommend you buy a discounted Dlink DI-604 or equivalent Netgear
unit, which I've seen under $20. Why? I have the Dlink and its great with
ADSL links. It will be your network router and work great with the AP. No
need to rock the boat if the laptop is working properly. In addition, none
of your PCs will need to be powered up for any system to use the Internet,
as long as your router is up. As a side benefit, it will allow the pricey
new 802.11g equipment to get their act together regards some of the new
features, like WAP and some of the speed enhancements. Some time next year,
you can safely replace the router and WAP with a combo Router/WAP.

I would ask your ISP to replace the USB modem for an ethernet modem and
connect it to a router. Both of your computers should then be plugged into
the router. I don't understand how your laptop is connected now to your
desktop. Do you have 2 NIC's?

As the modem was a freebie I guess I will have to replace it myself.... The
laptop is connected via wi-fi to the AP, which is connected via an NIC to
the desktop. It means at the mo that the desktop has to be on for the
laptop to access the internet..

Are you sure it is a USB-only modem?

Yep - presume it would be easiest to be a Ethernet modem/router in one to
replace it?
