Adding an Access Point - Netgear?

Hi,

I currently run a Netgear DG834G as my router connected to ADSL and
running my desktop and laptop over the wireless network.

My question is;

I also have a Netgear DG824M, which is a ADSL/LAN/Wireless router, can
I set this up as a second access point on my wireless network to run a
small wired network in my garage? Obviously the ADSL modem part would
be redundant as it's only acting as a Wireless/LAN router.

Is this possible?

Alex

Yes, works no problem.

Does the OP want to connected wired-garage==DG824M - - wireless - -
DG384G--ADSL?

If so, then surely this won't work? Both the DG384G and DG824M want to be
access points (servers) and not a "client".

That's my interpretation.

Yes, the DG824M would need to act as a wireless client. If it can't do this
(likely), then you're right; it won't work.

Many APs will do the job, but the OP will probably need a hub or switch too,
as APs normally have only one Ethernet port.

If not already done, it would be a good idea to test reception in the garage
(easy enough with the laptop).

Netgear state categorically that a LAN may contain multiple Netgear routers, you
can turn off wireless, dhcp etc at will on any router and just use it as a
switch I suppose. Do tell me if I have misunderstood or Netgear are lying though

True but you will find they are referring to wired connections.

The DG824M does not allow you to switch off the wireless

As the equipment he has is not WDS capable it is unlikely he will get
wireless<------> wireless to work.(I have no doubt someone can correct
me as well)

I seem to stand corrected on that, the 834 does but it looks as if the 824
doesn't (from the posted setup page anyway).
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N101236.asp shows typical multiple
router setup.
Definately not sure (anymore) if the OP can do this with his stuff though.

Diagram shows hard wiring between LAN ports on the routers and I
(mis)understood he wished to use a wireless link between routers.

Nah! Styggy (OP) wants to run a small wired network in his garage? Sounds like
an *interesting* garage :-)

This is what I was intending to do... Use the two wireless APs instead
of running a cable to the garage, however looking at the other posts
it's not looking that easy.

Maybe a wired connection with a small hub would be easier.

Thanks for the help anyway...

Alex
