add a network place

When trying to add a network place, I get the message "the
folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please
choose another." I know the folder is valid because I can
get into it, using passwork and username, through Internet
Explorer. I can even "add a network place" on another
computer using Windows XP. But with my home computer,
running Windows ME, I can't add a network place to a
folder I KNOW is valid, using a PASSWORD and USERNAME that
I also know is valid.

Anyone have insight?
