Being completely new to wireless and LANs, I'm trying to make an ad-hoc
wireless connection between my Clie UX50 and my WinXP Home desktop, which
has a broadband connection. I've not had any success so far! I want to
hotsync, browse and check e-mail from the Clie by wireless around the house.
I don't already have an ethernet LAN at home. I've previously successfully
connected the Clie to a public wireless access point, browsed Web pages and
checked my POP e-mail, so know its settings are correct for those purposes.
Having been assured by D-Link Tech Support that I could achieve a connection
using a DWL-700AP configured in 'Client' mode, I've bought one and connected
its Ethernet port directly to the desktop. I then ran the Networking Setup
Wizard on the desktop, and configured the DWL-700AP as 'Wireless Client'. I
then enabled Internet sharing on the desktop's broadband connection, and set
up the Clie's wireless connection in ad-hoc mode, with the channel matching
the DWL-700AP, and the IP address and Netmask as that showing for the
desktop's local area connection.
I then connected from the Clie, but although the connection to the DWL-700AP
seemed successful, when I try to browse the Internet using Netfront on the
Clie, I get error 'Invalid network settings'. When I try to receive POP
e-mail, I get error ' POP: Unable to connect. Check server name and port
number'. As noted above, I've already browsed and checked e-mail from the
Clie at a public access point, so presumably the basic Clie account settings
are correct. When I try to hotsync wirelessly, the connection is not made to
the desktop, although I've correctly entered the Hotsync network settings on
the desktop, and then ran a USB sync as instructed.
From all this I gather that the Clie is not 'seeing' the desktop PC for
Internet access and hotsync. As an absolute novice in these matters, I'm
stumped! Sorry for the long post, but I've tried to give what seem to be the
relevant details and would really appreciate some help.
