Ad hoc network up-and-running

I tried to get the Belkin wireless networking kit (two cards - one desktop
and one laptop) in the PC World sale - but there was none left. But one was
returned to my local store and I managed to buy it (including an additional
10% discount because it was returned goods). So two 54Mb cards for £35.

I set-up an "ad hoc" network yesterday and it's working well. But the
documentation wasn't much help. I had to fiddle around to get it working.

I'm pretty pleased with my set-up. I appreciate that I need my main PC
switched on to access the Net but that apart it does everything I want. One
odd thing though is that my wireless connection various from green (good,
very good or - rarely - excellent) to amber (low or very low) but my
wireless card is fixed into the chassis of my PC so how come the signal
varies so much?

Can anyone tell me the difference between a (wireless) modem, access point
and router? Would they all allow me to access the Net from the laptop
without switching on my PC (which is connected via BT Voyager USB modem)?
Would these improve my signal strength?

HNY.

Bobby

Hi Bobby,

I have no experience of wireless, but I can tell you that an adsl
modem\router is a very good thing. It will leave the connection to the
internet on all the time, so your laptop and PC can connect
independently of each other. No need to switch on the PC to access the
'net with the laptop. It's also a secure option. You might well find
that the signal strength is better with the wireless unit attached to
a router on the desktop as opposed to in your PC on the floor, but I
repeat - I know hee haw about wireless connections.

Good luck

Martin

Cheers. The advice sounds sensible. And now I'm having problems with my ad
hoc network. :-(

So I might upgrade to either a wireless router or wireless modem. What's the
difference?

I'm not sure such a thing exists as a 'wireless modem'. Normal thing to do
is to build a WAP into a route or a modem/router.

One such beast that I can recommend is the Draytek Vigor 2600We, I've used
one here since I've been on ADSL and it's never missed a beat.

Go take a look at www.seg.co.uk 'tis where I bought mine.

Sony used to do one, not sure if they are still available. Ideal for
wireless 56k dial up from a laptop or PDA without a wireless network.
