Ad Hoc network: PCs connect but ...

I have a desktop with an usb wifi card and an Acer laptop with
built-in wifi card. Both run XP.
On Desktop I created a new "ad hoc" network which has been seen by the
laptop; the connection is said to be excellent. Now I can see this
network on both PCs in "avaible networks".

But that's all...

I can't ping the other PC in both ways
I can open the workgroup on only one of the two PCs and "see" both
computers, but can't open it, even if sharing is enabled.

Can anybody give ne a hint? I have done everything that should be
done:
Same SSID, same workgroup name, same submask and different PC name and
IP. On laptop I can't decide the channel.
Both connections work under a bridge, so I have to use bridges'
settings to decide IPs.

Thank you to everybody!

Giuspi

Do you have the same user accounts set up on both computers?

Things are getting stranger:
I succeded in connecting the two PCs.
But today nothing!!! PCs don't ping and that's all :-(

Yesterday the ad hoc network begun to work when I modify the laptop
ping in 192.168.0.20, but today it's not working anymore.
What should I do?????????'

What do you mean by bridges.

If both computers indicate a good signal that means that they are connected,
so the issue is no longer wireless.

When I setup an Ad-hoc network I usually do this.
Set different computer names.

Comp 1:
ip: 192.168.0.100
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.100
DNS: 192.168.0.100

Comp 2:
ip: 192.168.0.200
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.100
DNS: 192.168.0.100

This worked for my friend and me. You may have done this already, but it
never hurts using someone else's settings. Who knows maybe it'll work.

Tell me if it works or not.

Still not working..

When I had my good connection I ever restarted my laptop and the
connection was still on; it's only when I restarted the desktop that I
could not go on network again!

Any hint?

Add the MS NetBEUI protocol to both. Most likely it's a netBIOS name issue.
Win XP has that protocol buried on their CD.

So are you getting a good wireless signal or not. Does wireless not want to
connect or you just can't see the other computer.

If the wireless does not connect I can't help you much if all the settings
match on both computers. Also don't use encryption on an ad-hoc network
until you set it up.

As far as network settings go, I think there is nothing wrong there unless
you have other prococols running.
You should have these:
Client for Microsoft Network
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Also try checking the connection by using net send commands if you are using
nt, 2000, or xp. start, run, type cmd, type net send 192.168.0.200 test. If
the connection is good you will recieve the message at 192.168.0.200.

Hope this helps.
