Ad-hoc mode using orinoco

I have two orinoco gold cards .I am trying to put these two cards in
ad-hoc mode
in Linux.
Using the iwconfig tool I changed the mode to ad-hoc and gave both the
cards the same essid.
I get the following
Card 1 ->the value of Cell(from iwconfig display) is 000000000
and Card 2-> the value of Cell is its own MAC address.
These two cards show no signs of connectivity.

How do I connect them?

Check the channel too and IP#
