Question: I have a DC running DNS with an active directory integrated zone.
Machines that are fully joined to the domain successfully update their dns
records on the DC. Machines that I haven't been able to join to the domain
yet will not register in DNS. Is this by design? If so, what are the
drawbacks of making the zone a primary zone instead of AD-integrated?
Thanks,
Mike

Use only Active Directory integrated dns zones unless you have a compelling
reason not to and there usually is not. See my other post about dns
configuration in the domain and for domain computers. A computer will
register it's dns records if it is successfully joined to the domain
assuming the computer has not been configured to not "register this
connection" in it's dns properties. One thing to try if the problem persists
is to temporarily change the dynamic updates to allow secure and non secure
instead of secure only. --- Steve
