Active Directory and DNS in Windows 2000 Server sp4

I am not sure where to post this message so I am trying 3 news groups.

I just bought 3 hard drives and installed in on poweredge 2400 with raid 5.

I also installed windows 2000 server on it.

All users can login and see all the files.

Now the problem is I cannot ping anyone from the server. I can ping from
client to the server.

My server's static ip address is 10.0.1.2 when I ping MYSERVER is does
return 10.0.1.2 so I beleive DNS and WINS working.

Now when I go to DNS click on my ZONE, I can see list of items and it also
shows file server's ip address as 10.10.1.1. I tried to delete and change
it but when I refresh it, it comes back. When I ping 10.10.1.1, I can ping
it too.

If I run DCPROM and get rid of active directory and reinstall it, do you
think I will loose all my programs and data that I already installed ?
Any suggestion ?

Thanks

being able to ping that address and name is not the same as DNS and WINS
working. You don't want to remove active directory if you can help it as
you would lose some information and access to some applications most likely.

If you're only problem is that you cannot find other machines, then removing
the AD is not the answer.

Why did you want to change the file server's DNS record? You do realize
that the file server will register it's own records, right? If you can ping
it, it should put that record in there for when it restarts.

Why do you want to change this record?

Domain Controllers will register their IP addresses with the host name of
the DC for each IP DNS listens on.
DCs will also register (same as parent folder) (The domain name) for all IP
addresses on all interfaces on all DCs, which is why it is not recommended
to multi-home a DC and will cause connectivity problems to web sites using
only the domain name if the website name is the same as the AD domain name.
You must access the web site by using www with the domain name
(e.g.www.domain.com) You cannot access external websites using only the
domain name if it is the same name as the AD domain name. You can do a work
around by configuring a web site on the DCs that redirect to
http://www.domain.com

You won't lose your programs, but you lose all domain user and computer
accounts.
