Active Directory and DNS registration problem

Hi,

I have some problem joining Windows 2003 domain to Windows 2000 domain.


The Windows 2000 AD does not function properly. There is no DNS Server
services running on the Windows 2000 Server itself. The DNS entries
pointed to an ISP which is wrong.

I tried to install a DNS server services on that machine, create an AD
integrated zone and allow dynamic updates. But when I try to join the
W2K domain(using w2k03), it says that it cannot find SRV record. How do
I manually all the DNS records so that it can be recognized?

Tried running Netdiag/fix but it has error and unable to manually
populate the DNS record. Herwe's the output of Netdiag/fix

You have a DNS issue. Has the windows 2003 register the record in DNS? what's nslookup look like?

I had DNS issue on Win2k Server. The previous configuration is not done
by me. Active directory is installed, but no DNS Server services is
installed on the Win2k Server machine. When I pull up the Network
Connection properties, I see the DNS is actually pointed to an ISP DNS.
And what I understand is the it is a public DNS server, and therefore
does not provides SRV records. Now, with Active Directory installed,
but no DNS Server running, I can't successfully join Windows 2003
Domain to this W2k AD. When I install the DNS Service in W2K Server
machine, there is no forward lookup zone configured. I have tried to
create a forward lookup zone, enable the dynamic updates, but it just
doesn't work.

The four folder name as below is not recreated, no matter what I do -
netdiag/fix, dynamic updates, enable AD integrated zone, etc etc

_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp

Can you give me guides what I should do to configure the DNS? It is a
single domain directory. How and what should i add in for the
netdiag/fix to work? I am quite a newbie in DNS records - SOA, A, NS,
SRV kind of records and I am not really sure what to put in.

Are "Allow Dynamic Updates" turned on for this zone?
Can you ping your domain name?
If not, try creating the record manually.

Yes, Allow Dynamic Updates is turned on for this zone. And I've no
problem pinging the server. I've not tried pinging using the FQDN.

Hi,


I have made changes in the registry on Windows 2000 Server. I have
double checked the registry entry is correctly modified. The Netlogon
failure still occur, as recorded by eventlog, until I rename the
netlogon.dns and dnb file in the Winnt\system32\config. Netlogon issues

is now resolved.


However, I can't locate the key in Win2k03 Server - >
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows NT\DNSClient


I can only locate the registry tree
->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Wi ndows NT


Therefore I create a DNSClient key and add the appropriate DWORD
UpdateTopLevelDomainZones and its value (1).


After the registry modification on Windows 2000 Server & Windows 2003
Server, I restart the netlogon services.


I proceed to join Windows2003 Server to the Win2K domain(previously ran

adprep on it). I received the error, as shown below. I entered the
domain name 'Local', not netbios domain name(SUNCITYSVR). I tried to
ping the host local.ibmtest and no problem on it. I have enabled the
dynamic updates on Win2K server. Included also the netdiag result.
Please help.
