Accessing root directories...

Hi everyone! My husband and I are on a wireless network here at home.
However, it is a pain in the neck that I can only access his shared
folder so I keep running back and forth to put stuff in there blahblah
blah...

Is there a way for me to have complete access to my husband's computer,
right from the C:\ drive on (and vice versa for him)? Or does this pose
nightmarish security problems? FYI, we are running our service
provider's security suite with antivirus and firewall, as well as the
firewall on the router.

Let me know, and thanks in advance!

Carmen

Depends how much your husband trusts you :-)

When he is logged on to his PC he can right click on any drive/folder,
select 'Sharing and Security' and then share that drive/folder any way
he wants to.

However remember if a user has full access, deleting a file doesn't put
it in the Recycle Bin. Once it's deleted, it's gone for good.

The root directories of all drives are always shared on Windows 2000;
\\machine\c$ etc (the '$' makes it hidden, AFAIK). You need to be a member
of the Administrators group. These shares cannot be disabled, and it is
impossible to share the drives with other privileges. Therefore, unless you
are an Administrator, it is not possible to access the drives of another
computer over the network.

This probably applies to XP Pro, it may or may not apply to XP Home.

Potentially. But you are probably doing something wrong if you feel the need
to have the whole drive shared. The best solution is probably to organise
whatever the "stuff" is so that you do not need access to the root
directory.

Surely the rule of thumb is to never share the system drive?

That's the way I set it up for people anyhow, I've never seen any problem
with just sharing the whole drives as long as they're data only. My other
usual is to move the desktops from the default location and onto a data
drive.

The windows junk of 'shared this or that' goes straight into the trashcan
as it's more trouble than it's worth and is usually buried several folders
deep.

For anyone on a single drive who's too dozy about setups to cope with
partitioning the rules change slightly and I create a directory called
'data' move the desktop in there and share it.
