Accessing remote PC

I have shoehorned an old PC into a cupboard that other PC's on my home
network can access files from.

I want to be able to check how much space I have left on the drives but can
only get access to the files on the drives.
As I said, the PC is shoehorned into a cupboard with virtually no space. I
know the easiest way would be to connect it to a monitor and do it that way
but is there anything I can do remotely to access this PC to avoid the
hassle?

Thanks.

If it runs XP Pro (which I doubr as it is an old PC), you could
access it via RDP. Alternatively, try VNC - available free from here:

Sorry, forgot to elaborate. It is old for me in that the other PC's are a
lot newer (if that makes sense ;o) ) It does run XP Pro.
I had a look at realvnc and tightvnc after reading another post but came to
the conclusion the apps would have to be run on the PC which is acting as a
server (one in the cupboard) which would mean attaching the monitor /
keyboard etc.

Can these be installed remotely?

If you are running XP pro, you don't need anything else:

Thanks but wouldn't I still need to rig up the monitor / keyboard etc to the
PC in the cupboard in order to activate the remote desktop connection? At
least for the first time anyway?

No. That's the idea for it. Same with RealVNC.

Conor,
I think you are mistaken. To get RDP or RealVNC to work initially
you need to install and enable it on the target system - which
means monitor/keyboard/mouse are required.

Steve,
Once set up, you should be able to start up and control the PC
remotely, including installing software, rebooting etc., without
the need for peripherals. I think that's what Conor was referring
to.

I thought it was too good to be true, not having to balance a monitor /
keyboard etc for the initial installation.
I suppose if it is a one off, I could put up with the hassle.
I'll give the RDP a try.

Thanks for the input.

as an alternative, you could use dameware or similar: assuming you have
an admin account on the remote box, it can install itself as a service
remotely, allow full remote control when needed (i'd suggest using it
to setup remote desktop rather than using it all the time as RDP is
*nice*), and stop/remove itself on disconnect.
great bit of software: it's not free but worth knowing about...

Well you have to do that on every single remote accessing method there
is. A decent OS by default has it disabled.
