Accessing a printer over a wireless network with Win 98SE

I have a new HP Color LaserJet 2600n installed on my home network. My other
computer can see and use the printer, but the Win 98SE system cannot. The
Add Printer Wizard asks for a network name which I assume is the mDNS name
but when I enter it I get a message that the named printer does not exist. I
also tried putting in the IP address and the hardware address. Installing the
printer on the network did not require me to name it. My other computer sees
it as 'HP Color LaserJet 2600n' which happens to be the mDNS name according
to the Configuration page I printed from the printer itself.

The 2600n only supports direct networking with Windows 2000, Windows
XP, Windows Server 2003, and Macintosh OS. See:

To use the printer with Windows 98, you have two options:

1. Connect the printer directly to the computer using a USB cable.

or:

2. Install the printer on a Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 computer, share
the printer, and install it as a network printer on Windows 98, using
the drivers on the CD that came with the printer.

I use the second option with the 2600n on my network, and it works
fine. The only disadvantage is that the host computer has to be
running and connected to the network when the Windows 98 computer
wants to print.

Thank you, I believe that you have answered my question, however I must point
out a small mistake. I am writing this upon my Mac, OS X ver. 10.4.7 and I
have no trouble accessing the 2600n wirelessly. I attached the printer to the
network, installed the software on the Mac and the Mac 'found' the printer
immediately.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry, please ignore that last post, I mis-read your statement.

Its not much of a network printer is it?
Ive just splashed out on a HP2600N, as I had installed a few in clients offices.
My own setup is not quite as Bill would like in that I have 2 x W98 workstations which perform quite nicely thank you, and I dont see why I should have to go through the needless pain and expense to (upgrade?) everything to Win XP just to make a supposed network printer into an actual network printer!

Usually network printers have their own network capability built in, as having to have the PC they are attached to switched on completely defeats the object.

Still suppose I should have known not to expect the obvious, after about 15-20 years in the computer business!!!

P.......ssed off yet again!!!!
