Does anyone know how as an AOL user I can access newsgroups without
Google, will I have to leave AOL?

No. Get a newsgroup service, such as http://news.individual.net/

I used to have AOL dial up and used IE as a browser and OE for email etc .

Ah, Usenet on AOL. Blimey I remember the 'interface' they used to supply
for their Usenet service before they pulled the plug. Absolutely dire,
and stayed exactly the same from 1994/5 until the day it died. It really
was a blessing putting it out its misery.

I hardly use google for newsgroups anyway, my ISP provides one with almost
40,000 groups

Would not have thought so, unless they actually *block* port 119
(which one or two ISPs have been known to do). There are plenty of
alternatives services, depending on whether you want only text or
both text and binary groups. Try setting your news application
to access free.teranews.com (it has a once-only fee of $3.95 or
monthly fees if you want more than about 1 GB a month) and if your
able to access it (ie port 119 is not blocked) then you should get
an error message or request to authenticate with username/password
(which will at least prove you can use alternative services easily).

NB TeraNews is one of dozens of news services, but there are also
some services which are download only (no posting, eg UseNext.com)
and some which are web-based (eg UsenetBinaries.com) which allow a
user to download video and images, but not upload, and not access
any software or sound/music newsgroups. HTH. Peter M.

Or use http://news.aioe.org/ and you won't have to pay those German
bastards a thing.

Good for you, but of little use to the person making the enquiry, is it!
Anyway, how many of those 40,000 are of interest to you! Peter M.

Incidentally, if the OP isn`t aware, news.individual.net charge ten
euros per year for access, but they`re very good - they filter the
majority of the sh*te and spam, but only offer non-binary groups.

PS: my "clickandbuy" account kicked in last night and took the renewal
payment for it without warning - on a card I cancelled 6 months ago...
