We have 4 computers networked through a DSL router. 3
computers are XP, and the 4th is Win 98. For some
reason, the 4th computer can no longer access the files
on computer #1. However, it can access the files on the
other computers.

When computer #4 tries to access computer #1, a pop-up
screen appears stating:

You must supply a password to make this connection
Resource: \\Computer #1\IPC$

There is no password that should be used. None of the
other computers require a password to access computer
#1. Please help.

Create a user account on #1 with the same user name and password that
you use to log onto #4.

This is the same problem I've been having. But I have no user names or
passwords set up on any of the machines.

On Windows XP Home Edition, run the Network Setup Wizard to fully
enable file sharing. That's all that should be needed.

By default, Windows XP Professional works the same as Home Edition.
On Windows XP Professional, you can disable "simple file sharing",
which causes it to check the name of the user who attempts to access
it over the network.

Your Win 98 computer is logged on with a user name, even if you don't
have to enter a user name when Win 98 starts up. To see the user
name, click Start and look at the "Log Off" entry in the menu.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I had already ran the Network Setup Wizard
on the XP machine, but the problem persists. The Win 98 machine has a
user name, but not a password (as far as I know).
