On my wired network, I can use Remote Wake Up / Wake on LAN to bring a
remote PC out of standby. The network cards I use support this in
hardware, and also the motherboards. I use an application from Depicus
http://www.depicus.com/wake-on-lan/ to send the necessary magic packet
to the appropriate MAC address.

I don't know if this is possible with wireless adapters.

More information please.....
If the wireless device on the upstairs PC is USB then the USB ports
are poiwered down in standby.
Simplest solution, as I don't know what equipment you're using, is to
not have the PC going into standby.

Do I have to put in a stairlift, or is there a neater solution?

TIA

This is not always the case, for the obvious reason.

Sorry; wireless is on the laptop. Upstairs is wired, both ethernet rather
than usb.

I'll investigate this wake on lan thing, but I don't know if wirelesws
supports it as such?

Erm, yes, it's been a long day! Can't say I've come across many
machines that do that though.
