Dear Usenet-Group!

My scenario at home:
PC with PCI WLAN Card
NOTEBOOK with PCMCIA WLAN Card
Access Point (USR2249)
all 22mbit, all US Robotics

I wanted to connect my PC with my notebook ("ad hoc" mode).
All was ok but the distance was too far. Because of that a connection was
not possible.

I bought an access point that is now in the middle of the two computers.
(mode was changed to "infrastructure")

The access point only works if its ethernet port is connected to a
router/hub, etc.

But I just want to connect my PC to my NOTEBOOK. I do not have any ethernet
infrastructure.
The access point should act only as a sort of "extender".
Is this possible ? Do I have to deactivate its ethernet port ? how ?

thank you for your help
richard

This will work fine. To keep the Ethernet port active on the AP all you
have to do is make a "loop - around" plug (take an RJ48 or any Ethernet
jack and strap the transmit and receive pair together ... then plug your
AP into it and "that" wire will be your Ethernet infrastructure).

There are plenty of small hubs like the little 4 port Netgear that are
very inexpensive. You can use one of those to plug the AP into as well.

Hello !

Thank you for information. It's working great.
I plugged an cat5-cable into the ethernet port of the access point, cut the
other end of it and connected the green (receive) with the red (transmit)
cable.

thank you
richard
