Access Point vs. Router

I am considering upgrading my 10/100 LAN to a Wi-Fi lan,
and do not know whether to choose 11 or 54 mbps. However,
the main question is do I need an Access Point, or should
I go for a Router, which is only about $7 more?

I want to use the wireless network to share my dial-up
connection, share music, and play multi-player games. I
have 3 pc's, 2 desktops, one laptop. Currently my wired
network is peer-to-peer with no hub.

Thanks in advance

Get the router. And get 54mbps (802.11g) if possible.

Okay, I got some magazines, chose brand that got 94% in
review; 802.11b/g and SuperG (Atheros) support. Question
is, if I have only two PCI cards; will I be able to
utilize all those speeds, or will my speed suffer without
an access point/router?

If all you want to do is connect two PCs you can use an ad-hoc network with
no router or access point and you should be able to connect at the best
possible shared speed between the two wireless cards.
