Access Point Basics

I have a wired network at home, but there is an area in
the house where the network wires cannot reach. I am
considering extending my network with wireless devices,
such as an access point. However, I have found that
access points are more costly than wireless routers.

I do not wish to replace the existing router with a
wireless one. My questions are:
1. Can I connect my existing router to a wireless one,
instead of connecting it to an access point?
2. Are there concerns that I should consider when using a
wireless router instead of an access point? Are there any
additional setup, software installation, etc. when using a
wireless router in this arrangement?
3. What are the advantages of an access point to a
wireless router?

Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Andrew

I am not the best person to answer your question, but I
will do so if I can.

You would have to buy the access point AND the wireless
router, then sell or store ur old ethernet router.

Just buying a wireless router wont help, because you
still have to run a line back to the main router to get a
connection.

I suggest the following items for your network. I prefer
linksys because they are repeatedly more dependable than
D-Link or NetGear by far, and are only about $5-$10
cheaper.

WRT54G Wireless G broadband router
WMP54G Wireless G PCI Adapter (FOR A PC)
OR
WPC54G Wireless G PCMCIA Adapter (FOR A LEPTOP)

After installing these two devices, you will have a fully
functioning network ready for high-speed transfer rates.
Have Fun!!!

just buy a wireless
